Danger: Web Work Zone Ahead

Lately I've been immersed in the world of web design. Of course, there is this blog although it has been neglected somewhat the past few weeks. I just finished a book called Creating Web Graphics for Dummies and am beginning another 400+ page book, Learning Web Design. But the main impetus for my new hobby is that I recently became the webmaster for the General Youth Conference website.

I'm actually the Vice President of Ministry for GYC, but the website and newsletter responsibilities were recently transferred to my department. Our website has been in dire need of a major overhaul for over a year now. We've been adding on to it here and there for a while and you could really tell that it was getting a bit ragged around the edges. Also, previous webmasters for the website were unable to contribute to its maintenance. Well, my new found passion for the web coincided with a rather desperate situation and voila! I became the new GYC webmaster.

People had given me a list of needed changes within the website. They ranged from fixing the flash animation on the homepage to major template changes. Oh yeah, I should mention that one of the reasons that the website was difficult to work with was because it was a traditional website that had been converted to a content management system (CMS). A CMS is a web application interface that makes the organization and publishing of web content easier (Blogger is a simplified type of CMS). GYC uses a CMS from Simple Updates that is much more complex than Blogger.

Many precious man-hours later, I was able to make most all the needed changes within the Simple Update interface. If you check the website, the stopwatch picture as well as the praying picture on the homepage are all new additions. The flash animation of our motto is newly re-activated. Many other modifications were made as well (content for the registration page is right around the corner).

All this was in preparation for the GC session since GYC has a booth there and will be expecting heavier traffic on the website. If you have any suggestions for the GYC website, feel free to write me by commenting on this blog entry.

By the way, Advent HOPE is working on their own website using a CMS system. Take a look here. The full website is still being deployed but there is a fully functional list of sermons that you can listen to.
